Gas gage indicator stopped working on 2004 Grand Prix. Cause and remedy?

Asked by rookjb Jan 25, 2012 at 10:14 AM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Gas level indicator on dash is not working - goes from full to empty when starting car and isn't accurate in general. Need estimate of how extensive the repair is and cost.

the Gauge sweep is the computer checking to see if the instrument cluster is receiving proper signals....the inop gauge is either an inoperative sending unit in the fuel tank (which requires dropping the fuel tank removing the pump and replacing the pump/sending unit assembly) or the wiring between the pump/sending unit and the computer is either damaged or corroded. check the wiring first

You may want to look in the trunk under the matting, towards the rear seat. There may be an access panel to the fuel pump, so you dont have to fight with usually problematic straps. Just be careful disconnecting the lines. If you look at the contacts on the fuel pump assembly closely, ( everything disconnected assuming.) operate the float and watch the little slider on the assembly. The contacts can get burned to a point they no longer provide a good contact. If so ,the unit should be replaced. I DID repair mine, but unfortunately it lasted about six months. Hope this helps.

On my 04 gtp the engine harness runs across the front valve cover over the sc belt and to the fuse/ relay box on pass side. My harness was low and rubbed through about 6 wires. One being the fuel gauge and for tap shift.. others in not sure cuz i never noticed any other problems. I fixed those wires and fuel gauge and tap shift work! Your welcome lol

You do not need to drop the tank to change the fuel sender unit or pump on an 04 Grand Prix, there is a hatch under the carpet in the front of the trunk. I replaced the fuel pump and sender unit on my and checked all fuses. The issue still presists!
