what could make the speedometer and gas gauge stop working

The check engine light came on and now the speedometer doesn't work until I drive awhile and the car warms up.

It could be your sending unit. Go to this link and read the answer to the fifth question down. It will explain what to do to make sure it is the sending unit before you replace it: http://www.2carpros.com/topics/gauges.htm
