Dashboard Lights with DRL?

This car has the LED daytime running lights. I notice that sometimes, the speedometer and tachometer backlights come on and other times they don't. Seems random. Is there a way, other than turning on the headlights, to get the dash lights on?

This may have a light sensor that will turn on the backlighting if the outside lights are lower then is programmed into the computer.
