What is "too old" for a vehicle

Asked by reality63 Nov 22, 2015 at 03:05 PM about the 1993 Jeep Cherokee

Question type: General

I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee that is being given to me as a gift. It needs a new water pump, radiator and windshield, a paint job (thats all I know right now). I do not know how many miles it has, but I know it has had one owner. My concern is that because it is over 20 yrs old, that it would not be wise to invest in a vehicle this old. Any suggestions?

keep it.... your 3 parts and labor aroud $450.... then have it detailed for 75 dollars!!!

Jeep Cherokees are not reliable vehicles. They seem to have far more problems than other cars. I would dump that one and get something else. Just the mechanical items you listed other than the paint will cost the better part of a thousand dollars to fix and when you are done it will be worth $2,000 tops.

Also ... they are horrible on gas mileage ... even the 2 wheel drives

A good vehicle is never too old, but might be expensive to maintain. Those old Jeeps like in the picture were pretty much junk when they were new so a used one could be a nightmare. I would find a better vehicle to spend my money on.

Well let me say this I have a 90 model jeep. And I drive it every day. No nothing the best on gas. And yes I have had to repmace some parts. But its 30 years old. And when I look at all of the other 4x4 stuck in the snow and ice. While me and the kids are tooling around. I say. Keep it drive the wheels off of it. Like you said it was free so any money you have to out into it. Shouldnt hurt ya.

382k miles on mine, cannot believe these morons posted anything. These vehicles created jeeps reputation, and purposefully made all future jeeps unable to fit the 4l engine in future cars. A lot of people forget to take in account that maintenance can equal out to be far less than monthly payments. Mine is about 150 a month to maintain and I drive 110 miles a day at 20 mpg, that and my value appreciates the longer I own it.

I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 64,872 mileage now Daddy drove it, Mom drove it and I inherited it with 31,000. It's a great car. I live in Alaska and many roads are off-road type. It does great in weather, hot or cold, snow, ice or rain. Nothing but regular maintenance. and replaced a few things. My insurance totaled it when a van ripped off my front bumper. I did not take their settlement--I went and got it fixed for less than their estimate. I love this car and it's in mint inside and out. I don't want a new car.

So many negative comments about Cherokees (obviously from people who NEVER owned one). I OWN a 1997 4dr, 4wd, Cherokee Sport. 273,000 miles. It is 24 years old. I have kept up with maintenance and parts replacement as needs be. It has the 4.0 straight six. I run Michelin Defender tires. Stock suspension and tire size. 90% of the time it is on highways. I get consistently 20 mpg, even loaded down with camping gear and a canoe on the roof. I take it off road on backwoods Forest roads in State and National Forest areas. I Do Not do any real Hard Core off- roading, ie, swamps, flooded roads, rocky mountainous trails, etc. All seats have been removed, except the drivers seat. I have converted the interior into a ‘four wheel drive backwoods motor home’. Book value prob $2000- $3000. But I wouldn’t sell it for $10,000. I LOVE my Cherokee !
