Taking the shifter out if park

There are times when I cannot take my car out of
park what could cause that

On my suv I had a little plastic piece break and my shifter cable came apart. It was in drive but shifter was stuck in park. I looked under my suv and saw the shifter cable hanging down. Yours might be on the verge of breaking in half, mine had 0 warning
