2014 Impala LTZ, Side vehicle detection system

Asked by LTZ_Driver Jan 10, 2019 at 08:36 AM about the 2014 Chevrolet Impala

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The Side Detection Module went bad in my car. The shop said it is located
under the right front bumper area and said that it looked like it has gotten
water in it. My car completely shut down. The entire electrical system. Can
this little module actually shut the entire system down? I can see maybe
shutting the detection system down, but the entire car locked up. No passing
go, no collecting $200. And no get out of jail free card. Please help.

So, I have had a problem twice in two years. It's a pain. Why haven't they been recalled????!!!!!!!

My 2015 Impala side detection module went last year. Now my daughter's 2014 Impala has the same problem. Her electronics went out also. The dealer disconnected the module to fix the problem. I contacted Chevy and they called today (some guy from India). Pretty much too bad, there's no recall.

GM has a new program for this issue. I believe if your Impala has less than 80000 miles they will replace both modules and the harness. My dealer informed me yesterday. It only goes until December. GM should be sending a letter if your vehicle is covered.

Our 2014 Impala has the module & wiring harness bad due to getting water on it causing a bunch of electrical issues. Called GM 4/15/2019 and they are saying there is no program or recall with this problem and they can only put it in the system for a complaint. If you repair it and a recall comes out later they then will reimburse. Roe or Guru if you know a more specific recall number i we all can reference to when calling them that would be great.

My 2014 Impala is having this issue as well. Had an appointment to have the right side looked at and on the way to the dealer the left side went out as well. This is the second time to have this repaired on this car, the last time was under warranty. The first time I was told it was due to corroded wires. Loved my car, but it is sure having a number of issues lately.

same thing just happened to my 2014 Impala this past weekend, i just left the dealership, As of April 1st 2019, GM is offering to replace the blind zone sensors for free because of so many issues people are having with them. it is not a recall but take it to your Chevy dealer and it’ll be free to replace them if needed

My 2014 Impala LT's went out at 84000. I got the letter last week saying I could get it reimbursed if I had it repaired. Now being told NOPE because I had it done after the 80000 miles. THANKS FOR NOTHING CHEVY! Forked over $965 bucks for that repair last year on the POS Impala with too numerous to list other issues!

Guru: would you be able to share the information from the letter for those of us that may still be able to have it looked at and are under the 80k miles? I'm around 35k and just started having this issue and have been reading forums and posts like this before taking it in, but have not found any recalls specific to this. Mine goes in and out of working/not working.

This happened to my car this morning, my sensors went out, gave me a side detection service thing in dash, I went to dealership after work, they are covering mine under the recall notice that I showed them I am posting the pic for all of you. If I didn’t have the recall it was covered under my warranty.

As of May 2019, just received a letter that side blind zone alert has been recalled. Take it in to fix at no cost. If you paid for the fix already, there is a reimbursement form.

I just had my Chevrolet Impala 2014 repaired under a recall, oops they dont like that word, its called a Special Coverage Program N172097060, (https://repairprocedures.com/bulletins/document/n172097060/5310108.html)... but this Special Coverage only covers the following: 2013–2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2014–2015 Chevrolet Impala, 2013–2017 GMC Acadia .... They will change the 2 side modules and a new harness to prevent water infiltration in the modules... Good luck!

This is not technically a recall. I just got off the phone with my local dealer and she looked it up in the bulletin. She said not all vehicles will end up with the problem, but when the problem arises if you call in they can look it up in the Special Coverage Adjustments on the GM website and it is there. I don't have warranty on my Impala, so this is not a warranty coverage or a recall but a coverage under Special Coverage Adjustment. I just want to clarify all that if you call in to fix your issue. I for one want to thank FinsFam03 for his pic because that's how I figured it out

They dont like it when we call it a recall, if they pay for it , its a recall to me... they created a kit of 2 modules and a new wiring harness "Module Kit - GM (84648919)" it sells for $294.39USD.. https://www.gmpartsdirect.com/oem-parts/gm-f-module-kit-84648919. The installer said he needed a machine to adjust it since the modules and cases that hold the modules are different... Hope this helps... My friends wife bought a 2019 Buick Encore and the sensors failed after 7 months. I would keep after them to replace it..

GuruSL1LW - Does this module kit work for several models? Apparently I get to order my own because my car is a flood car. UGH

I am so mad I’ve been waiting on this part for my 2014 impala LTZ for 5 weeks now. All the dealership keep saying is that the part is on backorder and there’s no ETA. Part 84648919

Took my 2015 Impala in yesterday to get this fixed. This problem was also causing my center council display to go out. Occasionally the display would come back on only to shut off again once I got the side detection error again. Yesterday the dealership replaced the recalled side detection module but the display still did not come on. I insisted immediately the root of the cause was still the module that caused that issue considering the display goes black once the error pops up. They then checked the error codes and insisted on going through the steps to fix the display as usual(ignoring the facts and the history of the problem). The guy said "it's usually the wiring" and of course it wasn't. They now have the complete display unit on order that is going to cost me $600. So when that gets in I have a feeling it will still be black. My gut tells me the code/error/bug from the side detection module needs to be cleared somehow and once that is gone it the module won't error it out anymore now that it has been replaced. What a nightmare, not looking forward to the phone call.

Same problem with mine. They call it a goodwill gesture, however they don't even notify the owners. I was just 2 weeks out of the goodwill gesture period as they call it. I called GM prior to bringing it to the dealer to have an idea what could possibly be covered.  I was told bring it in for diagnostics and if that was in fact the problem,  since it was just out of the time frame and I wasnt even notified that it should be covered. I was also told that the district manager for the area dealerships could cover it 100%. They would work with my local service manager and come up with a settlement essentially. My local dealership Clements Chevrolet in Rochester, MN said that the DM won't cover anything. I was disappointed since another person at GM said they could cover it 100% and chose not too. So much for taking care of customers and standing behind your product. It wouldn't be so bad if they already didn't admit it was an issue with the goodwill gesture to fix a know design flaw. I have driven GM vehicles all my life, but if a company isn't going to stand behind a product that they knowingly designed wrong, how can I possibly continue buying and recommending GM vehicles to others.

It is the rear impact sensor located just behind the exhaust. Common problem and GM will NOT recall...the sensor is up under the bumper skin...on both sides of the rear bumper... take battery neg terminal off...reach hand up under bumper skin on drivers side rear...right above the exhaust pipe, you will see the black sensor and a terminal connection...disconnect the terminal (unplug it)...you have to wiggle it a lot it is in pretty tight...reconnect battery neg terminal...should be good to go...these are not necessary but send a "safe" signal when they fail and it totally screws the electric system on you...good luck!

My 2014 Impala is in the shop right at this moment. My electrical system went haywire over the weekend. The instrument panel went out, infotainment system, and heat console. The turn signals were not working, speedometer or gas gauge. I did not even drive my car yesterday because it's a safety issue. Thank God I still had the letter they sent me in April 2019 about this issue which is alledegly corroded wires in the rear bumper. I just called the dealership and was told that some of the wires were cut in the dash. Cut by who? They are going to have to try another excuse. I was sideswiped in August of 2019 and did not start having these electrical issues until I picked up my car from the body shop. We took pictures and videos of what was occurring. I will raise hell because my family's life was in danger.

I have a 2014 Chevy impala ltz and it does the same. Today I made a complaint to http://nhtsa.dot.gov/ about this problem being a safety issue. Maybe if enough ppl do the same we can get this issue fixed (recall) instead of paying out of pocket.

Had the same thing happen to my 2014 LT. Dealer replaced both units, no charge under the recall notice. Now 2 years later, the replacement parts have failed.....would they be covered by the same terms as the originals?

I had this issue happen to to my 2016 Impala yesterday. I suggest that anyone from Canada fill in a complaint with Transport Canada because this is a safety issue. Especially if it causes the car to stall on the Highway with no notice. https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/PCDB-BDPP/fc-cp.aspx?lang=eng They will contact you right away.
