2011 Jeep Liberty Heat blows cold
We just flushed the heater core. Not much crud
came out. The thermostat appears to work on the
dashboard. No radiator leaks or sweet smell. We
opened the radiator cap and revved the engine
trying to bleed air pockets. We topped off
antifreeze while doing this. The heat came on.
Pulled the truck out to drive around and it blows
cold again. It works some days and goes cold the
next! Anyone have any suggestions?
Jeeps and thier air pockets are maddening, I had to raise the front up a foot and slowly bled the system to all the air out of the cooling system on my old Jeep, took about a hour from start to finish, they are a pain. If you still can't get it out then I suggest you find a shop that has a flushing machine and have the system power flushed and filled, the machine gets all the air out during the refill cycle. Sometimes it's worth a visit to a shop.
Oldstorqnpower yes good flow from radiator b4 capping. The Jeep was at Valvoline, they topped with recommended coolant.
Tennisshoes do you think it is air pockets 100% the issue or could it be something else? The guy who flushed the core said it's working and he thinks it's the temp control actuator because he heard it click and the heat came on. But we disagree because we haven't touched the temp control since then and the truck is blowing cold again!
High quality thermostats will have a jiggle pin in them. There's also failsafe thermostats.
The thermostat showed the truck warms up from cold to between cold and hot so I assumed it was functioning properly. Is it the same t-stat that displays on the dashboard?
Now wife says the dash had a clicking noise near the climate control and the heat turned back on.
Don’t know if this is too late, but based on that clicking noise and your symptoms it is most likely your blend door actuator/motor, look it up on YouTube and you’ll find videos showing where it is and you can easily see if it is working by turning the hot/cold dial back and forth and checking to see if the gears are moving on the motor, if they aren’t when you don’t have heat then that’s the culprit.
I have replaced 2 heater cores and 2 motors in the past 3 years. Barely warm air after heating it up for a half hour.
Heater core half plugged, very difficult to flush, the old style core could be reversed flushed,, you had 1 inlet and 1 outlet of a continuous tube, new cores in the Liberty are set up like a radiator, tank on top and bottom, when they plug farthest from the inlet, the fluid takes the path of least resistance, therefore only half is getting the hot coolant. found this on my daughters 2008 Liberty. Had to replace core !!!
It was the blend door actuator
