My 96 GMC 1500 pick up has battery light on

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Battery light is on, electrical gauge is past 19 in orange zone, engine surges until it dies (or is shut off).  Starts normal and idles normal with auto-start.  Turn key to on position and still idles normal until hitting break, then the engine surges begin.  Also starts fine with key but engine surges begin within 10 to 15 seconds.

OP here. Took alternator to parts store for bench test. Alternator wasn't grounding so I bought a re-man and installed it. Seems to have solved the problem.

    The check gages light comes on and the temp gage climbs to max for a minute or so. It then will immediately go back to normal. This doesn't seem to effect the performance.
