If you have been smelling fuel, you really need to find out where it is coming from. I would say that is what is causing your P0422. If the light comes back on after it is repaired either the gas cap is leaking, which may require replacement, or it may just not be tight enough.

In my case the fuel small came from the filler neck. where it attaches to the body and the gas cap was... it was corroded and cracked, venting smell into the trunk then into the car, really bad when it was a full tank. The code, I am unsure of.
