97 Dodge Intrepid won't shift

My 97 Intrepid wont shift automatically when in overdrive. Goes to 35 only. I can get up to 60 in 3rd gear, but only if I keep tapping the gas to get it to kick up higher. But doing that, my RPMs are 4 1/2. HELP.

Was the transmission slipping or giving kicks prior to this issue or it appeared suddenly? How many miles on the car, assuming this is the stock transmission?

No slipping before. High mileage. 150+. It probably just needs last rites but with this economy I want to try everything first.
