Gauges not working in 1964 mercuy comet

Asked by May 15, 2016 at 09:01 PM about the 1964 Mercury Comet

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The speedometer works but nothing else in the cluster does. Is there a fuse that may be blown or is this a deeper issue? Hoping there is a quick (ish) fix.

It is possible the instrument cluster voltage regulator is bad or missing. Looks like a circuit breaker and should be near the cluster. Rock Auto has them and they are kind of pricey, see at the link....http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/mercury,1964,comet,3.3 l+200cid+l6,1491364,electrical,instrument+cluster+voltage+regulat or,4885

Collectible car, YES! Do you have a convertible, V8, Four speed?? High cool factor, great for Sunday drives, but, not SAFE as a daily driver., I hope you have special insurance on this car.

Yes they were fused back then, if you can still see the fuse box lettering it will say gauge. It will be a small glass fuse, so you most likely won't be able to tell if it is blown unless you take it put and ohm it. If it checks then it could be the IVR, you can test it by checking for battery voltage on one side and a pulsing voltage on the other side, if it isn't pulsing then the IVR is bad. Note: do not bypass the IVR as that will burn out all the gauges.

It is a 3 in the tree with a 202 engine. Not a daily driver just use it to cruise around!

These answers have been helpful! Thank you all I will give it a go.
