why does the power steering go out?

I have a 1971 el camino and when im on the freeway going over 50 mph and i
break quickly my power steering goes out.  I pull over and it fires right up again
like nothings wrong.  Why does it do this?

Add some Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak it not only stops leaks but also corrects rack and pinion problems.
