My Ranger runs cool but heats up when the air conditioner is on. If I stop and it is hot and try and start it I have to gun it to keep it running (it backfires). Why?

The engine could be overheating from the added strain of the ac. Have you tried flushing and filling the engine coolant.

if it was hot you shouldn't try and start it , look on the bottom of the oil fill cap and tell me what you see .
