A warning light is on! Looks like a gear-stick. Tried to disconnect the battery for
ten minutes (but did not short the + / - of the car.

I am not aware of any dashboard lights on the 993 that look like a gear stick. Unless you can post a picture of it, or read your handbook and identify the warning light, nobody can help you with it.
