what is the biggest engine I can fit into a 1996 sunfire se coupe without doing any major modifications?

put the stock engine back in you will be better off.

Yeah, the 2.2L stock engine is about all you can do with this vehicle.

Yeah, but I'd be willing to bet that the 2.4 is probably the same block as the 2.2, with a longer stroke. Just my guess.
