what is required when the "service tranfer system" light comes on and the trans system is turned off

this only happens once ib a while and only when I start by backing up

Do you mean the service traction system light, if so one or more of the wheel bearing sensors need checked or replaced.

The sensor is actually in the wheel bearing itself so if the sensor is bad then the wheel bearing has to be replaced.
