Double check battery connections. A loose or dirty connection can cause this. Also might try lightly tapping on the starter with a wrench or hammer while someone is turning key to start position. If it then cranks the starter is bad and will need to be replaced.
Good advice from dandyoun. Before you smack the starter make sure you've actually got power to the solenoid with the key in the start position. You might have a bad neutral safety switch. If you can start the car while jiggling the shifter in the 'neutral' territory, it's a bad switch.
Just wondering if you ever determined what was wrong with the Bonneville and why it would not start?
