Asked by GuruFV943 Apr 19, 2020 at 01:07 PM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT AWD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a '96 'sploder with a blown head gasket and
a friend with a '99 4 ltr out of a rolled '99 explorer.
Are those interchangeable?

The 96 has a 4.0 OHV engine. The 99 may have a 4.0 OHV or 4.0 SOHC engine. If the donor vehicle is an OHV engine, it will work as a plug and play. Just keep in mind during the history of the 4.0 OHV engine there were probably a dozen or so modifications to the internals which are year to year part specific. If you ever have to bring the car to a mechanic for repairs, you'll have to inform him as to the year of the engine. Good idea to write down the VIN on the donor vehicle and keep it in the glove box just in case.

Ok cool but what if the '99 donor motor is a SOHC? Not so easy then? And, is the SOHC motor better for any reason that would make the extra work worth it -- if it's even possible? Thx much -- JMB

4.0 OHV engine reliable. My daughter is still running around in her 1999 to this day. I had a 2003 with a 4.0 SOHC engine. The OHV engine produced 160 HP while the SOHC had 210 hp. I'm an older person now. I was almost 50 when I purchased the 2003. I am not a hot-rider and meticulous when it came to oil changes and maintenance. The engine blew at 60,000 miles in 2010. Known problems with timing chains. One in front and one in the rear. The engine has to come out of the vehicle if the rear has to be replaced. If your engine is an OHV engine, find another one. Stay away from the SOHC engine at all costs. Just my opinion for what it is worth. Search the net there are a million horror stories.
