1996 Explorer AC/Heat only working on high speed

I just bought a 1996 Explorer. The heat/ac only works if the speed is on high. Is
this a resistor or the blower motor, or something else altogether? Also, the
compressor was making an awful racket, so I charged it and that fixed the noise
but the AC still isn't blowing ice cold, but it is cool air at least. Thanks in
advance for any info and help

The fan speed is controlled by an independent resistor mounted around the blower motor. It controls the blower speed by applying different resistances to the electrical feed to the blower as you turn the speed switch from low (most resistance) to high (least resistance. If the heat/AC only turns the blower on when you select high, your problem is likely the resistor board. As for your compressor noise, I would repair, replace depending on what you find as the cause.
