I have a 1996 Ford Explorer 4WD, and have never known the correct way to engage and disengage the 4WD...I did a couple times placing it in R and driving back about 10ft or till I heard a noise /click. However a few months later I had to replace my rear end...not sure if it was coincidence or if I did...either way I don't wanna pay for another one. What's the correct way...it engages from floor.

there should be notes on you driver sunvisor. You want to have the vehicle in drive to go into 4 high or 4 low. to take it out you will put the vehicle in nuetral.

I don't believe you can blow the rear end trying to engage four wheel drive. I live way down south where we consider 40 degrees artic weather, so there is little use for four wheel drive vehicles. My 96 explorer has two wheel drive, but it is not at the house right now. When it is I will check my owners manual and get back. Again, I do not see how you can damage a ring and pinion gear by putting the car into four wheel drive.
