Gear shift is stuck in park

It is most likely your brake switch. There should be a shift lock release where you can insert a flat tip screwdriver or, a key and it will allow you to shift the transmssion. When the brake switch fails the gear shifter will lock because your vehicle shouldn't be driven without brake lights. An easy way to find out is to push on the brake pedal and have someone look to make sure your brake lights come on. If its not the brake switch, it might actually be the transmission itself is damaged. With a 25 year old pathfinder, it could be either, I hope this helps . Here is a youtube video on how to get at the shift lock release on a NEWER pathfinder. It should be EASY to find if you actually look for it. : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CRqIUS4E50
