Automatic Transmission 1995 Nissan Altima

The OD button wouldn't engage. Took it to a transmission shop and was told
no available parts. They offered to rigged it permanently so the OD will always
stay on. On rare occasions, I did have to start the car in neutral. Just curious,
could this repair cause engine problems? Such as, engine shut down while
driving.

Sounds like you could actually have a shifter problem. If it won't start in Park, that would indicate the shifter position value is not being measured correctly. I would imagine that could also cause the overdrive to not be selectable. I suggest you take it to a competent shop. It's also unlikely that it would need parts that aren't available. Transmission shops are usually the worst place to go for any issue- even transmissions.
