Diagnostic brake & idling help!

Asked by 2hotNAz Sep 01, 2022 at 02:08 AM about the 2000 Nissan Xterra XE V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

And Shopping/pricing help! 2000 Nissan Xterra lost
my brakes today.  Heard air coming from pedal
while sitting idle, then immediately hard to push
pedal & stop…& started to idle like a lawn mower at
lights like it wanted to die? Any possible diagnosis
help? Idk if relevant but 2 weeks ago I had my h2o
pump& timing belt done, and he changed 3 other
belts cuz I had them new already & the ac
condenser only cuz he accidentally put a hole in
other while changing timing belt) was running okay
a little sluggish but not nearly like today after
brakes and something else occurred making it very
evidently wanting to die? Paid a Mobil mechanic
$150 this evening to hook up a tester (or whatever)
for 1 1/2 hrs… (yeah I know! ) to diagnose it then
only to be told it needed brake booster and he
wasn’t sure about the idling.  Any possible
diagnostic possibilities for any of it would be
appreciated as well as places to get a booster (if
that’s what brake issue most likely is) online, etc.,
cheaper than auto zone etc., ??

Definitely sounds like the brake booster. But, before you replace the booster check the large vacuum hose going to the booster. You've had a lot of work done to the vehicle recently and it's possible that the vacuum hose either fell off the booster or got broken during the repairs. A lot of stuff was moved around under the hood while the other repairs were going on. Plus, given the age of the vehicle, that vacuum hose is probably very brittle. So any movement could have easily cracked or broken it. If you do need a booster try Rockauto.com. They have reasonably priced parts and I've bought from them many times. Hope that helps! Jim
