I had a similar problem with an older Toyota Landcruiser. It idled fine but when I stepped on the gas applying a load the engine sputtered and stalled. It turned out to be a clogged fuel filter. Once replaced it worked fine. Maybe it's something as simple as that in your case.

Had the same experience on my '00. Hit the gas to pass & slowed down to 40. Clogged fuel filter. I mean really clogged with black gunk. Also was overheating easily. Why? Radiator grill full of bugs! Don't you just love cheap & easy fixes??
