In cold weather the hatchback fails to stay open. Have you heard of similar complaints? Was there a recall on this condition?

Yes, it's common for the little gas charged lift supports to fail. It's a 5 minute job to replace them that requires only very simple tools, usually a flathead screwdriver will do the whole job.

no recalls but there is hatch bumpers you can purchase that are replacement and work better. The problem is that your car may have not come factory with a rear spoiler and the dealer installed one and the extra weight is why you need updated bumpers for vehicle.

Yes, the support struts are probably shot. The cold weather causes the gas inside them to contract, which provides less holding power. Pay to replace them, or do what I did. I took a broomhandle and cut it to length to hold up the gate on my beloved former 95 Pathfinder. Not elegant, but it worked. And it was free. You can paint it to match your car's color, too.
