whirring sound under load , 2005 chrysler town and country

Asked by QuestionGuru123 Dec 08, 2020 at 07:58 PM about the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country Touring FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my wife's van runs fine, but it has developed a "whirring" sound when under
load.. (coasting is fine). It sounds like gears working together, no grinding
sound, just a sound that wasn't there before.  looking under the van, the
transmission and a smaller pan next to it have a wet sheen of oil.  What may
account for this increase in noise and could it likely suddenly cause
something to break and leave us stranded?

Considering the "wet sheen" I would check fluid levels to start with. Low fluids = overheating, which could in turn cause you to be stranded if not properly monitored. If one of your fluids are low I would check that system for a leak so that it can be fixed. The whirring sound could be caused by not getting enough fluid to it to help keep it cool and lubricated
