Can you tell me if there is a "check valve" consisting of ball and spring held in by the mating plate between the valve body and the main transmission fluid maze unit ?

After cleaning the innards of this transmission I ended up with an extra spring
that fell out along with an "L" shaped screen filter, which I could put back in.

You would have to look on a parts diagram rebuild kit such as TransGo or have a vehicle specific manual to verify.
