2019 X5

Asked by ibmcmullen Feb 22, 2019 at 01:05 PM about the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i AWD

Question type: Car Customization

Has anybody figured out how to get a radar detector to work in the new
(2019) x5's?  They re-configured the electronics so that the cigarette lighter
won't power any plug-ins of any sort and if we have a detector installed by a
third party (BMW doesn't do it), it voids the BMW warranty.  Have been on
the phone with BMW "geniuses" for hours, they have no work-around.  This
is a real issue-- help please!

Success!! I had luck this weekend on a road trip using my old dual adapter cigarette lighter. Mine is similar to the one in the link below. I've had mine for several years and used it in my older BMW 328i so my Garmin and radar detector could be plugged in at the same time. I've also finally found a phone jack to USB cord that I've ordered but haven't tried it out yet. I'm hoping it will work and I can just get rid of the cigarette lighter cord altogether. If it works, I'll post a link to what I bought, which is made for price scanners. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Splitter-1-to-2-Way-Cigarette-Lighter-Dual-Socket-Power- Adapter-DC-12V-Plug/113067439118? epid=1268881031&hash=item1a5358340e:g:0jgAAOSwwTlbJFEr:sc:USPSFirstClass!352 43!US!-1

How stupid of BMW to make this nonsense change. Also, who makes a double-end USB 3 wire to charge the phone in the back seat? Why wouldn't they put in a stanmdard USB for the US?:??

I had the same problem. I just placed a small metal nut in the middle of the well and the adapter powers on.

My 2019 X5 takes my new V1 plug just fine. Just hate the cord hanging down. I used a mirror tap on my 2015 X5.

Can someone post a picture of the small little nut and the size of it? I can't see it from the above picture.

I used a 7/16 nut with a 1/4 internal diameter and threaded it slightly onto the end of the positive terminal of the Escort charging plug, then filled that with solder. It works maybe 95% of the time, occasionally I need to twist the plug in the socket to remake the connection.
