1997 Ford Expedition - Why would my car shut off when I stop?

My car shuts off when I stop or when I put my car in reverse. It will idle hard and either shut off or kinda jerk forward abit. What can cause this problem? Please let me know what you think. It feels alittle hesitiant when I want to start driving and actually jerked forward once.

you may be able to go to Auto Zone to get the check engine light code read for free. this will give you an idea of where to start.
