1997 ford escort wagon idles rough- in cycles. I can hear a click just before every time it gets rough... How fix?

Click seems to be somewhere under dash... cycles on off- the idle smoothes out then goes rough again.  The power seems to
cycle the same as I drive on the highway, or up hills...

Are you running your A/C? When I do I get all kinds of funky noises and revs go up and down...Its called a Air Compressor disc clutch Mine clicks like crazy when on...........No noise at all when off.
