Car stalls at stop light-rpm drops below 1, what could be cause of this?

Asked by Jan 06, 2017 at 01:41 AM about the 1994 Mercury Tracer Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just a month ago, when I come to a stop light, it will stall.   Put fuel injector
cleaner in gas, cleaned throttle body and put new spark plugs-car still doing it-
what could be causing this problem?

Have someone check your harmonic balancer.... It works with the automatic transmission and controls the idle speed when the car comes to a stop.

A bad ISC can cause this, when you cleaned the throttle body did you remove and clean the ISC passages also? If too much crud get in the passage it can ruin the ISC motor and it won't function. Other causes can be no signal from the ECU, broken wiring for the ISC, faulty signal from the TPS, has the computer been scanned for codes? 94 will be the old system so not everyone will have the tool to scan it, you may have to call around to some shops to find one.

I really like both answers very much-thank you fellas so very much. They both seem very plausible.

Thanks for the best answer points, hope it is an easy fix.
