why does my new 2019 equinox engine turn off when i am stopped?

That is the fuel saving feature the salesmen are scared to tell customers about. The Start-Stop feature turns the engine off to save fuel while waiting at a red light. I don't think there is anyway to turn this thing off. I suppose we will get use to it. But I wonder how my A/C will keep up without the compressor running.

Welcome to the world of "green". You can probably bypass it but you will have to do it every time you start the car. It ain't easy being green ;)

you can put the vehicle in whatever low-gear (“L”) or manual (“M”) mode option it has, and set it to shift through all the gears. Such modes allow the automatic transmission to do its thing, with the driver setting a limit by selecting the tallest gear they want the transmission to reach. By selecting the top gear in the transmission, you’re allowing the transmission to shift into all gears as usual, but auto stop-start is deactivated because you’re outside of “D”.
