2009 Hyundai Santa Fe shuts off while driving

Asked by GuruV5RTZ Aug 07, 2018 at 10:11 AM about the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.3L GL FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was exiting the freeway, turning left and accelerating when the dashboard
on my 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe lit up like a Christmas tree for a second, then
the car shut off.  The power steering and brakes stopped working but the
radio and air conditioning continued running.  I was able to pull over, put the
car in park and restart the ignition with no problem.  I've been driving it the
last couple of days but I am worried this could happen again while driving on
the freeway.  Any idea what the problem could be?

Following. Exact same thing happened to us...same year, same model. Had just had alternator and purge valve replaced. This is a VERY dangerous flaw that could result in a fatal accident. Please update with any info you might obtain. I will do same.

2014 Sana Fe (gas) just shut off and wouldnt start. Had it towed to Peacock Hyundai in Columbia Sc. The guy later called me and told me that it needed an entire engine.

Did you all figure out what it was? Did it do it again? Our 2009 just did the exact same thing.

My 2009 Santa Fe 3.3 L has done this numerous times. Got a tuneup on it thinking it might help but it has happened two times again. Talked to Hyundai and they told me that I was the first to report it. Yeh I think it is a software problem. I shift the car into neutral and touch the brake lightly, to turn on the brake light but not hard enough to engage the brake. Turning the key to start has worked everytime so far.

I've had same issue for our 2009 for a few years, our also have the new issue of the gas gauge won't read. I had the oil leaking on the alternator recall fixed the gave me a new alternator and valve gasket. But it seem to be doing it everyday , shuts off randomly. It turns back on Everytime though without issue. I hear and see all these repairs done and nothing fixes it not sure what to check or repair first.

Mine (same year & model as original post) just started randomly stalling, too. I’ve taken it to 2 repair shops and no one can tell us what’s wrong. Is there a way to hold Hyundai responsible for this?

I have a Santa fe 2.2 2009 model, had it for a year and no issues but recently started stalling everytime I would stop at lights or giveways; starting back has not been a problem. Got it checked twice, new turbo also but drove yesterday after new turbo and the same proble - it stops after running for a few miles from cold start and then at lights and give ways engine would shut off, I restart and it works for until I press the break again.....not sure what to do. Any idea or advice please

The same exact thing just happened to me tonight in my 2008 3.3 Santa Fe. I was accelerating up a hill and it scared the hell out of me because there were a bunch of cars behind me. I was able to start the car right back up again but as you all mentioned I'm super scared that it's going to happen again possibly on the highway next time. I was hoping to find someone here with an answer.

Hi all - this just happened to me last week. Did anyone end up figuring out the issue? I am scared to drive the car again on any busy roads for fear of it cutting off mid drive and causing an accident. Car is with Hyundai now and 'they can't find any issues with it'. Thanks for any and all help.

My 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe does the same thing but the steering is hard to turn and the brakes work fine but when I come to a complete stop I see the battery light came on with a few other lights. It did it four times and I don't know what the problem is exactly
