My cars check engine light stays on,  and it runs really
rough when it's idling and even in drive. it shakes kinda like
it's going to eventually die but it doesn't
And there is a really bad smell while it idles.
What might be wrong

Can you describe smell? If it is like rotten eggs (sulfurous) you may have a bad catalytic converter, which can plug up and block exhaust flow, causing a rough idle and loss of power. As Tom suggests, get the codes read, so no more guessing.
