02 cougar no life

Asked by Billiek82 Aug 14, 2016 at 03:44 PM about the 2002 Mercury Cougar V6 Hatchback FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Driving with windshield wipers on. Suddenly
they stop working, I pull over and the car
dies. Now there is no power of any kind
anywhere. Tried changing battery but it
melted my cable when I tried to attach em.
Any ideas?

You obviously have a big time short somewhere. Start with the battery wiring harness, make sure the big rec and black cables to the starter solenoid and starter relay are not frayed or touching. Water may have exacerbated the short, hard to tell without a hands-on inspection. Until that short is found, it will continue eating batteries. BTW, if it 'melted a cable' as you say, check also the fusible links too, as those are designed to blow in that situation.
