2002 Mercury Cougar Wiper & Hatch release not working

I just purchased a used 2002 Mercury Cougar and the wipers do not work at all.  Previous
owner stated the motor was changed so i changed the switch but it still does not work.  
And today my hatch release decided to stop working.  Any ideas would be most
appreciated.  Thank you

If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times the last generation cougar was not a good car. They have a lot of electrical and mechanical problems. Ok that being said, check fuses first for all your problems. You can't trust that the guy actually put a new wiper motor in it. Look at it and see if its really new. Sorry to have to tell you all this but its true.

Thank you so much for your input, it turned out to be the wiper motor. now it works fine other than the intermittent not working yet but i will deal with that a bit later. Again thank you for your assistance.
