Suttering in 2019 Dodge Ram while turning from stop to low speed

Asked by Riley Sep 12, 2019 at 08:14 PM about the 2019 RAM 1500 Limited Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I can feel a stutter in the steering wheel and also if I get out of the truck and put my
hand on the rear wheel well I feel it vibrate there too (while my wife moves the
truck). I actually hear the sound on the back wheels. It's almost like the brake pads
are grabbing? It happens to me when you are completely stopped left off the brake
and apply a small amount of gas while turning. Its seems going straight (forward or
reverse) does not do it, or it's not as detectable as when turning. This happens to
me backing up and going forward while turning. Does anyone have any ideas? I am
not sure.

You have a warranty! Use it! The cylinder deactivation system can cause vibrations. Try driving it in tow mode. If the vibration clears up you know what the problem is.

Yes I realize this. I just happened to discover this issue about 3 hours on the night before we are pulling the RV on a trip for the weekend. I do not think it's going to affect our trip but I did want to see what you guys thought. I am pretty much certain its the rotors and the breakpads being activated without touching the brakes at this point.

I have the same problem. Turning right or left from a dead stop. Guess I have to bring it in.

@guru its in the back for you as well? Please let me know what the dealership says. My dealership wants to replace something else (that is backordered) that I don't think is the real issue.

Yes in the back. Im making a appointment today. When I called the dealership, the service guy never heard of this problem. But I knew I couldnt be the only one.

@Guru where are you out of? Let me know what they find out plz! I don't think super highly of my local dealership. I am in Maryland.

A shudder in the rear end can be the differential clutches slipping unevenly. You may need more friction modifier in the gear oil.

Question for everyone. Does everyone pull heavy loads with their trucks? Also I have the 3.92 rear end. Does anyone else? I have a travel trailer that is 8k lbs.

My axle is the 3.21 but I do pull a camper which dry weight is ~4500lbs and have noticed the same noise (but louder and not really a shutter) when turning hooked up. Maybe the camper weight deadens the shutter? I originally I thought the noise came from my weight distribution swing arms lacking grease, obviously not any more now that the truck makes the noise and shutter when completely unloaded.

All fixed! Just needed new friction modifier. Must of not been filled correctly from factory. Found no shavings or wear on gears. Also fixed the three recalls. (painted ground wire, pedal adjuster and software update)

This was so helpful! I have a 2021 ram 1500 Big Horn with less than 5000 miles on it. This started happening several weeks ago and has been driving us crazy. I just left it at the Ram dealer and they said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I returned to the dealer and insisted on a ride along with the assistant service manager and he noticed it right away and agreed that it probably just needs some/more friction modifier and they are going to add some. Being able to read him the solution from this thread was a frustration saver. “Hey Siri, Ram 1500 jitter when turning.”
