The AC blows air but there is a time lag in the compressor engaging sometimes the compressor does not even kick on. When the compressor does come on its almost like a drain on the hole engine.

Sound.s like you may have a bad clutch on your ac compressor, you said when it kicks on, it drag.s car back, that may be because it is bad and dragging your belt back, therefore you lose a little power, most ac,s do drag a liitle on the car ,but if it is doing this, may need to check your ac compressor.

And one more thing to add, check your freon first.

Low refrigerant will cause a lag in compressor on time. If its too low, it won't kick on at all. But if the drag you mention is extraordinary, it may be time for a rebuilt compressor unit. Don't forget to change the receiver/dryer unit at the same time.
