Rear hatch latch "clanks."

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just recently, when I lift the latch on my 98 Explorer, the locks at either end of
the tailgate "clank" loudly. I've tried WD-40; it continues. There's no difficulty
opening; it just makes this disruptive noise. Any idea?

Have I for once found a problem that's unique?? This'd be the first time! I'm reluctant to take the tailgate apart and look inside; will probably ask my mechanic to do so when it's in for inspection--at considerable cost I'm sure. The gate still latches just fine; but that noise when it opens is loud enough to startle the neighbors 100 yards away. Definitely sounds like metal on metal. Help!
