Alternator not charging battery

Asked by Tonya Feb 06, 2023 at 05:29 PM about the 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just put a new alternator on, the battery has been
tested and is good, all fuses are good. The battery
light comes on when the key is in the on position. The
battery terminals are clean. Alternator belt is tight and
in good shape. When the battery is charged it will
start right up, but depletes quickly.

When you say, new alternator, is it just new to you? Is it rebuilt or remanufactured. If so, join the club of al the people who get defective alternators or alternators with defective regulators. always bench-test things like that before installing them.

Pull positive side off battery, connect a test light to connector cable side and touch probe to positive side if test light lights up bright you have a 12v draw on battery, you are allowed 0.5 of a volt before parasitic draw occurs killing battery. Question does anything in car work w ignition off? Radio fan ect? If yes alt has a shorted diode allowing current to keep system working diodes are for one way flow of voltage, and will check out on a test because its still generating 12v
