I have a 2002 kia sportage 4x4. I had a bunch of work done on the 4x4 a couple of years ago and finally had to use it and it is making a whirring noise? It works but is that bad

Yes, it is bad. It sounds like a wheel bearing gone bad. Need to have the wheel bearing inspected.
