93 Jeep Cherokee Charging System Problems

Asked by Holly Jun 10, 2019 at 04:02 PM about the 1993 Jeep Cherokee 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our Jeep died while we were driving first radio
went off then dash lights and headlights dimmed.
We tested the battery, it’s good, we pulled
alternator out and had it tested and it passed three
times. So we assumed it was the voltage regulator,
which is in the ECU. We didn’t want to replace that
with full proof it was the voltage regulator so we
bypassed the voltage regulator with an external
voltage regulator. It drove for 2 day, we thought all
was good but then the same thing happened.
Radio shut off, dash light shut off and headlight
dimmed and the Jeep died again. Any
suggestions?

It's 26 years old and those things seem to be an electrical nightmare to begin with , mice can invade even a daily driver and connections can corrode , take it to a technician after looking closely for obvious wiring problems If it's rusted out underneath you may not want to put a bunch of money into it .

clean your ground connections. consider installing bigger wires for your ground connections to the chassis and to engine block. i had EXACT issue and was too broke to afford a 150$ alternator... i changed wires and cleaned all the connections from battery threw the charging system. boom, fixed it all.
