Red airbag light and rpm and mph shut off

Asked by Krista Nov 07, 2015 at 11:40 PM about the 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I start my car the red airbag
light comes and then quick hoes out
but then while I'm driving the light
comes back on plus my rpm and
mph go on and off while I'm driving.
Today when I drove it home the light
stayed on through the whole ride and
no gauges were working. Midway
through the ride all of the gauges
went back on except rpm and mph
what is going on?!

This sounds like a firewall-to-battery ground issue. Either that or a bad multi-plug in the printed circuit in the dash/gauge module. I'd go for the ground first, since access to that multi-connex requires a new wrist above your existing one. It's tight behind that dash! Jeeps were a nightmare, electrically-wise.......so bad that when they came in on a tow truck, all the line mechanics went to lunch even if they just ate brealfast.
