Has Mazda fixed the rust issues with the Mazda 6?

Asked by BartMonty Dec 27, 2017 at 07:31 PM about the 2017 Mazda MAZDA6 Sport Sedan FWD

Question type: General

I have read that Mazda has had some rust issues occurring early around 2
years after purchase' especially on the Mazda 6 in the wheel wells and the
frame. Have they resolved this issue on the newer models from 2015-2017?

Thanks,
BartMonty

If you live in a state where roads are salted there will never be a rust free car unless it is made of stainless steel. Practice good car care and hose the wheel wells and underside off regularly.

No they haven't. I have 2015 Mazda 6 Sport Nav that started to rust within one year. Contacted the dealer and Mazda direct. They didn't want to know. Their warranty isn't worth the paper its written on. Great car but let down by the worst finishing and paintwork I've ever seen. Its now 3 years old and its full spidering rust spots and bullet holes. Absolutely shocking. Avoid at all costs!

Well i have a 2009, no rust at all. Paint is good. I wax seasonally by hand. I do not have to deal with prolonged salted roads but one can’t hose down things in freezing temps either. Maybe i the summer pull off the wheelwell plastic, clean it out, and brush on a coat of rust proofing.

I have a 2006 Mazda 3. It has been rusting from the rear quarter panel badly since about 2012 (guessing). I have fixed it once but it keeps on coming. Apparently there was a recall for a defect with the wheel well sheets not being sealed properly in the factory but mine was not included. I would have taken this up with them but did not come across the recall until after paying to repair it the first time. I just let it rust now but it is very embarrassing. I also found that my 2.3 was a lemon engine after replacing it and won't be buying another Mazda.

My daughter purchased a new 2016 Mazda 6. In less than 2 years the vertical surface on the trunk lid is rusting all over. So many spots you can't count them. Mazda has been fighting with us for 5 months now saying everything from my daughter hit the trunk with bags of groceries and caused the rust, to just not answering. The process is ongoing, the customer service rep seems to be on our side but corporate Mazda doesn't want to admit there is a problem. The car is flawless other than the license plate area of the trunk lid. The rust is from side to side and top to bottom and under the plate as well. So it is nothing that we did. Our collision shop has even been contacted by Mazda and they agree with us that it is bad metal. I don't think we will be purchasing another Mazda ever. This is the third 6 the family has owned and the first time we've needed Mazda to back their vehicle with their warranty and they don't want to do it.

My 2006 had a factory recall on my exact problem but they failed to include my car in the recall. I tried to get them to deal with the problem but not just watch the back quarters rust all over my drive way. Mazda is close to me but I won't be buying another. I am moving up the chain and will buy an Acura RDX instead of a Mazda equivalent. I also have a 2013 Hyundai that is rusting and will not buy another one them.

I just purchased a 2015 Mazda 3. No rust at present, but i'm now going to keep a regular check for any starting. Wouldn't of bought the car if I'd known about the rust issues; my own fault for not correctly checking the car out before I purchased it!.

Bought a Mazda 6 in 2017, noticed rust under the hood on the black frame panel, & also parts near the windshield. Took to the dealer service center. They are throwing all manner of lame excuses at me, saying I should have always kept the car in the garage, saying I didnt drive it enough with only 5200 miles, saying I failed to maintain it properly. Nowhere in the owner's manual does it say I am supposed to do something to the parts under the hood. It's still less than 3 years, at about 34 months. They should have used parts that won't rust! What can I do to get them to honor the warranty. They are claiming it was due to environmental factors. It's not like tree sap fell on the paint or rock chips. This is a protected area under the hood! I will NEVER buy a Mazda again.

I bought a brand new 2016 mazda 3. It started to rust around the trunk plate and some seams. At the time the car only had 25k km. They tried to give me a run around with excuses, the problem is I'm an engineer that worked in automotive and design/know about corrosion. So he couldn't trick me and was forced to submit a claim to mazda. They didn't replace the trunk but sent it to a local body shop. Its 2020 now and my car has gone back a second time for repairs as the rust was getting worst. I'm 100% sure it will come back again within the 7 year warranty and I will have to take it back again. I love the car but unfortunately I wont by a mazda again. PS don't but a dodge product either, I purchased a brand new caravan and the transmission broke with only 300km on the vehicle. They fixed it and it broke again with 1000km on the vehicle. It's fixed now and my minivan has 2200km.

I have just purchased a 2014 New Model Mazda. Cracking car....and the outside body is immaculate. However, I had to spend almost a week thoroughly rust proofing the under body - particularity the rear suspension arms and both front and rear sub-frames, which were disappointingly bad.....they would have needed replaced/welded in a year or two if further ignored. A lot of the floor and structural steel you cannot see as it is covered by plastic covers; I assumed when I removed these the car would be in good condition - wrong! A lot of wire brushing, painting and waxoyling followed. Now I know the car is almost 7 years old, but I have a 2009 Peugeot and 2009 Citroen whose under-body suspension and floor are practically like the day they left the showroom! Again, I love the car - it is superb, but feel Mazda have cut back on sufficiently rust-proofing this car.

2004 here. All four doors, R rear wheel well rusted through, rust spot on roof. Car was washed and waxed regularly and started rusting around 2010. I believe the doors don't drain properly and rusted from the inside, and water gets trapped between the quarter panel and the wheel well liner as well.
