there are a wide range of possibilities but the Idle air sensor on the upper intake plenum could be the problem.

Coil Pac for SURE!! I've been the NOT so proud Owner of a 2003 Expidition and That has been the only oain in my A@@!! Check with an OBD Code Reader. You can buy it at Auto Zone for $60.00. Tells which one is malfunctioning. Good Luck! Sabrina

The same thing happen to my 2000 expedition 5.4L. I replaced the Idle Air Control Valve and the problem when away. When the Idle Air Control Valve is clog or broken, it does not allow enough air in the engine, causing the engine to idle rough and die.

I have a 2001 Eddie Bauer Expedition, and had this same issue,so I replaced the Idle Air Control Valve, didnt work. Checked and replaced ALL the coil packs, didnt fix it. What did fix it very well was I replaced the Catalytic Converter and now it runs fine. Funny, it was the cheaoest part too.
