What is causing my SUV to cut off soon as I put it in gear?

Does it start right back up? If so possibly dirty/faulty idle air control valve or dirty throttle plate.

Yes, starting it is not an issue. Just keeping it on once I put it in gear. So my altinator would have nothing to do with it?

Probably not unless battery is real weak and alternator is not putting out around 14 volts.
