I have a 1985 Ford LTD Crown Vic, just rebuilt the motor, ran fine until I replaced the voltage regulator, if that's what it is now it won't stay running, when I drive it, it spits and sputters

Did you ground the reg frist if not you burned it out must ground frist then pulg in
