Starter installation

Asked by F350driver Jul 26, 2020 at 04:02 PM about the 2003 Ford F-350 Super Duty XLT Crew Cab SB DRW 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I installed a new starter.  Is the tab on the battery wire used as a ground?  Should it be touching anything on the starter case or lug?  When I connected the negative battery terminal, I heard a pop.

You have a short. There is no ground for the starter since it is bolted to the engine and transmission.
