I have a 2000 Hyundai Sonata 6cyl that was given to me by my inlaws about 8 years ago. Around 4 years ago (not too sure how long ago) it started skipping really bad & the check ingine light came on.

Every single time, after it started
skipping the first time, I change the
spark plugs & wires out, it starts back
skipping not too long after. It will start
& stop skipping whenever it wants to &
the check ingine light will go off if it
does not skip for a while & the
computer resets. I also find that when
the engine is cold (If it has not been
cranked up to warm up before its
driven, even when it is hot or cold
weather outside), or if its cold, humid,
or wet outside it makes it skip alot
more. This has been going on & off for
years now but right now its getting
way worse than its ever been before so
I just wanted to see if anyone else has
had these problems with the same
make & model & has figured out the
issue. Sometimes it skips so bad
pulling out from a stop that it bogs
down so low that it seems like it is
going to cut off & for this reason the
driver could get hit by another vehicle
& I will not put my 17 year old daughter
in an unsafe car. Until its fixed or if I
cant fix it I will have to find her a
starter car before the middle of the
next school year because she has to
leave high school to go take a college
class during her second semester (She
is an honors student with a very high
gpa) but right now we just dont have
the money to buy another vehicle. My
daughter just turned 17 & I would
really like to fix this car for her to drive
next school year. This may sound
crazy but I come from a very poor
family & if it wasnt for my in-laws
giving me this car years ago & for me
keeping all of the maintenance up to
date on it (Yes I am a woman & yes I
can & have worked on vehicles for a
long time & can work on most
everything that you wouldn't have to
have a shop for) then I wouldn't have
had any transportation for the past 7
years. I just recently purchased a pre-
owned vehicle so I would like to keep
the Hyundai Sonata in the family
because it has alot of sentimental
value to me.(I know it sounds crazy
right?) Also, my daughter cant drive a
stick shift yet & we have tried to teach
her multible times with my new car
(2012 Honda Civic SI) & my moms
truck, which hers is very hard to learn
on because the clutch catches so far
up towards the top when my Civic
catches at the bottom. (Its even hard
for me to keep from rolling back on a
hill with my moms truck because of
the clutch & I concider myself a very
experienced driver in most vehicles,
motorcycles, & trucks.(I also have my
cdl's) Please, if anyone can help me
out at all with this I would really
appreciate it.

Hi Melissa, Your problem sounds a bit different from mine, but I'll tell you what the problem was for me. Forgive me, as I'm not great with exact terminology. The case covering the engine coil (or the coil itself) had a crack in it. So, every time it rained, water would get into the engine and the spark plugs, causing my engine to misfire. Once the engine had heated up, the water dried out and the issue went away. My car has been driving great since they replaced the case (or coil)! So my suggestion would be to check for cracks around your engine to see if anything is leaking in. Best of luck, Rachel.

A few other suggestions: the mechanic said that if there wasn't a crack in the coil case, he was going to check to see if there was any fuel leaking, so you could try that. Also, a lot of Hyundai Sonata cars from 1999 on have a problem with a Faulty EGR Switching Valve. (http://repairpal.com/rough-idle-due-to-faulty-egr-switching-valve-314) You could look into that as well. I hope this helps!
