why are the bumpers of my honda accord made of rubber?

Actually, your bumpers are made of pliable automotive grade plastic compound. The function of an automotive bumper is to absorb crash energy without significant damage to itself or the vehicle's front or rear end. Today's bumpers are made with a reinforcement bar of steel, aluminum, fiberglass composite or plastic. This impact system includes crash absorbing mechanisms that compress on impact, such as foam or plastic honeycomb and are designed to withstand a 5-10 mph impact with a vehicle of comparable size/weight.
